HOU’s Got Snow
Imagine waking up in Houston, of all places, to a blanket of white snow outside your window. Yes, you read that right—snow in Houston! As someone who just moved to Houston from a tropical place with no ounce of snow, and knowing this city doesn’t experience snow, it was a weird & interesting experience. If anything, I was hoping for a snowy Christmas as that would’ve been magical like a Hallmark movie straight out of the TV. But snowing in January was fun nonetheless!
The Night It All Started
The forecasts hinted at a snow day, but let's be honest, who believed it would happen? There were a couple of freeze advisories leading up to snow day. We’ve seen shoppers in our local HEB hoard bottled waters & toilet paper multiple times. But wow, this time it was real! The forecast was that snow would start at night. At 11 pm sharp, I glanced out my patio that night, snowflakes were gently falling—a beautiful and surreal sight! I took a video to show to my husband who was still doubtful it was real snow. Imagine his wonder when he woke up to our surroundings still blanketed in snow.
Social Media Buzz
Naturally, social media couldn't get enough of it. From Instagram to TikTok, Houstonians shared photos and videos capturing the city’s snowy makeover. Check out this TikTok video that perfectly captures the fun and excitement. Or take a look at this YouTube adventure of a family enjoying their first snow day—it’s a delightful watch!
Neighborhood Adventures
Walking through the neighborhood, I found the dog park bustling with activity. Typically, our neighbors have all gone to work and the park was quiet. It was alive with people and their pets, all eager to play in the snow. Snowmen with all sorts of creative accessories popped up, and kids delighted in making snow angels. Some neighbors we’ve seen in the Bayou are using different kinds of household items as sleds such as pails, baking pans—who knew everyday items could double as winter sports gear?
One family I spoke with couldn’t resist waking their kids up in the middle of the night to see the snow for themselves. It was a beautiful reminder of how such moments can create lasting memories.
A Rare Treat
Snow doesn’t frequently grace Houston's streets. I’ve seen snow before, and it snowed in Houston in 2009 and 2021, but it seems this snowfall felt extra special. It brought a sense of joy and togetherness to our community.
This snowy day was more than just a weather anomaly—it sprinkled happiness and created shared experiences across Houston. These are the times that remind us of the beauty in life's surprises.
