There are Houston spas that offer cold plunge, or hot baths after a massage, or just a pure sauna place but have you ever been to a place that does all three in one go? Meet Löyly Sauna Lounge. Opened in 2024, this wellness spa is redefining relaxation with its focus on contrast therapy.
What is Contrast Therapy?
That was the same question I asked when I got invited to try this place. Contrast Therapy draws inspiration from Finnish sauna traditions that alternate cold and hot therapies to boost health. In a nutshell, you do a cold plunge then straight to a hot tub. Founded by Cindy and Dion Ruzicka, who used contrast therapy to support Dion’s recovery from lymphoma and Sjögren’s disease, this Houston wellness center is a personal passion project. This practice helps boost circulation, reduce inflammation, elevates your mood, and improves your sleep.
What is Löyly Sauna Lounge, and how it is different from the other spa centers in Houston?
Löyly’s 45-minute contrast therapy sessions cycle through a 41-49°F cold plunge, a 104°F saltwater hot tub, and 170°F infrared saunas, all in a shared space that encourages community. Unlike typical spas in Houston, Löyly emphasizes communal healing with shared sauna and plunge spaces, oxygen-infused cold tubs, and expert-guided breathwork. It is an open concept, so don’t be shocked when you visit and find the amenities to be communal. Don’t worry though, Löyly is very thorough in keeping the space clean, hygienic, and everything is sanitized between each guest.
At Löyly, a standard contrast therapy session includes:
Cold Plunge: Face your fears and do the cold plunge for 30 secs - 3mins. I only survived for 40 seconds. Yes, I was counting!
Hot bath: Right after the cold plunge, dip in the hot tub for 5 mins. This was my favorite part. I was floating in the tub and purely relaxing.
Sauna: Spend 10-15 mins in the sauna room.
Rinse off all the sweat from sauna, and repeat the process 2x. After rinsing from your last sauna experience, end the contrast therapy session with a one last cold plunge.

The Verdict
Doing the contrast therapy at Löyly was unexpectedly different and unique vs all the other wellness spas in Houston. It offers community, and the benefits of deeper relaxation by shocking your body with the contrast therapy. When I was doing the first round of my session, especially the cold plunge, my body was in fight or flight. I was counting 1 Mississippi (hello Ross?!) to make sure I last at least 30 seconds. The mental challenge to keep your body in the cold was tough. I felt my feet and hands numb, I was doing deep breaths, and by the time I got out of the pool, I couldn’t move! But then I went to the hot tub and all was well in the world again. The sauna also made me sweat like crazy. Talking in the sauna felt like doubling the calories I burned. After all, this was the point of a wellness spa centered in community. The contrast therapy benefit I felt after the session was improved sleep for the night. My body felt so tired that I went into snoozeland after.
