Radio Tave: Inside Meow Wolf Houston’s Mind-Bending Art Universe
This past weekend, I had the chance to experience one of the most creative, jaw-dropping installations in Houston: Radio Tave by Meow Wolf aka Houston’s Interactive Art Experience.
If you haven’t heard of it yet, this isn’t your average gallery. Think: immersive storytelling, wild visuals, strange portals, and interactive soundscapes all wrapped inside a cosmic, Texas-inspired fever dream. It's art you can touch, wander through, and lose yourself in. Plus, it’s all indoors! You don’t need to worry about Texas heat in the summer.
What Is “Radio Tave”?
Radio Tave is Meow Wolf’s fourth permanent exhibition and Houston’s first large-scale immersive art experience. It brings together over 40 Texas-based artists alongside Meow Wolf’s signature interdimensional storytelling style.
The result? A beautifully bizarre, multi-sensory maze of light, color, sound, and memory. It’s like stepping into an otherwordly experience where each room, art, wall, floor has their own funky personality.
What You’ll See (and Feel)
Each room is its own micro-universe, blending:
Neon-lit forests and glowing corridors
Vintage arcades and whispering walls
Giant installations with mysterious switches, doors, and clues
Touchable, playable spaces that react to your movement and sound
The first room you enter after their introduction is a radio station. You can play the piano, pretend you’re in a recording studio, DJ away. It was packed with people who just started the tour, and people who have been inside just re-exploring. It wasn’t the most exciting room and definitely was not a taste on what to come.
Not gonna lie, there were some weird, funky stuff in there. There’s a room on the ground floor where if you pet the little statues, they produce eerie noises. There was also a room that’s full on creative where you can virtually paint on the easel by tapping paint brushes and colors. The vibes where whimsical, addictive, and easy to get lost in. There are also some rooms that are darker or more disorienting, and with strong strobing lights which may not suit very young kids or those sensitive to light and sound.
If you are feeling tired from exploring, there’s a full bar on the ground floor. It’s like a dive bar from Star Wars with three-boob bra on the ceiling, full-size figurines you can dine with on the table, a jukebox, photobooth where you can print the copies for $7, and some angel & horn background for your photos.
Is It Instagrammable? YES.
But more than that, it’s experiential. You’re not just snapping photos, you’re interacting with the environment, solving mysteries, and discovering secrets tucked behind panels, doors, and unexpected objects. There’s a giant fridge that opened to a new portal, so we though there might be more hidden yet visible doors too. Pro-tip: if the door says employees only, best believe they are for employees only. No tricks there. Don’t ask me why we know 😆
