The Workout

First Class with Becca

I didn’t know what to expect in my first visit at Sense. I’ve been doing pilates at a different studio in town, and Sense has a different reformer + tower machine I’ve never used. Becca gave a rundown on the machine, how to use it, and what do we do with the other workout gear. Becca went straight into business by having us lean on a ball and targeting our core for a solid 10 straight minutes. She was guiding us in every workout, and while I was suffering, she was glistening! We then worked on our legs and single leg exercises before ending on a plank. It was a different experience from the studio I regularly go to and honestly loved it. Becca challenged us with the moves, even modifying it to newbies in class.

After the class, PAs from Skin Pharm greeted us and gave us some goodie bags worth $50. Wow! Sense Pilates had a collaboration with Skin Pharm that day, which also happened to be National Pilates Day. Sense Pilates Sweat + Skin Pharm SWAG = Saturday Well Spent for sure!

Second Class with Nancy

I attended a second class at Sense Pilates with Nancy as the instructor. I told Nancy about my high arch on the back which makes some exercises strain my lower back. She gave me options and mentioned she will give some modifications as we go along the class. We started sitting down, facing the tower with the ball on our back to activate the core. We also stood up on the rails, to do split squats where my legs and glutes just burned. There were moments where we needed to do core workouts with ankle weights and I was struggline to crunch up, extend my legs due to my high arch. I modified the exercises to suit what my body can handle and Nancy was supportive. I loved Nancy’s class, she did high repetition workout on full body, arms, and legs giving us the sweat we needed for the day.

Sweat Pilates vs other studios

  • Machine: Sweat uses reformer + tower combo while other studios use either BalanceBody or Merrithew reformers. IM=X Pilates uses their own reformer called Xercizer that doesn’t have a platform, with heavier springs. I felt the springs in Sense were way lighter than what I’m used to

  • Workout: I’ve only tried 2 classes in Sense but the instructors have different styles and methods which I liked so much to avoid repetitions leading to boredom. Other studios I’ve tried have a templated workout that they do for all classes, regardless of instructors. I felt my body shaking more with Sense.

  • Intensity: Intensity level varies per person, but I’ve noticed that Sense does high repetitions to tire out the muscles vs others that just do counted reps, and move on to the next workout. The weights offered such as dumbbells, ankle weights were also heavier starting at 3lbs vs others that start at 1lb.

The Studio

Stepping into Sense Pilates Studio feels like entering a curated oasis of calm and sophistication. Unlike other studios that are dark, plain or has party vibes, Sense Pilates felt like a blend of luxury and functionality. The studio is located in River Oaks, and it definitely matched the neighborhood’s exclusivity, yet people were welcoming. Stepping into Sense Pilates Studio feels like entering a curated oasis of calm and sophistication. The space is airy and light-filled, with a sporty yet polished color palette of soft neutrals, deep greens, and white texts on white walls. The reformers were divided into two columns, with each column having 5 reformers facing a mirror. As you keep walking inside, there’s a private room for their body roll classes along with two roll machines inside.
