Sugar Bean Coffee & Cream: A Cozy Cafe in Galveston
If you find yourself in Galveston Island, Texas, craving a good cup of coffee and a touch of local culture, Sugar Bean Coffee & Cream is your go-to spot. We always go here when we’re in town for the coffee and the vibes. Especially during Mardi Gras where they decorated the cafe with Mardi Gras themed colors, and even offered Mardi Gras pastries— my first King Cake!
Stepping into Sugar Bean
When you step into Sugar Bean, you'll immediately smell coffee beans brewing. The vibe is super relaxed, making it a perfect spot to chill out, work or chat with friends.
The place is decorated with comfy seating and warm lighting that feels like getting a hug from a cup of coffee. They also have a good music playlist to match with the aesthetic.
Mardi Gras Vibes in Every Bite
During my Mardi Gras visit, Sugar Bean was a riot of colors and flavors. Themed decorations brought the festive spirit to life, but it was the pastries that truly stood out. Think cookies adorned with purple, green, and gold icing, in mask and bead shapes, and king cakes that match the city’s lively parades.
The king cakes here are a must-try. Each slice, with its cinnamon swirls and sweet icing, is a party in your mouth. It’s the kind of dessert that not only satiates your sweet tooth but also adds a dash of celebration to your day.
A Warm Cuppa for the Soul
What’s a visit to Sugar Bean without diving into their coffee offerings? The Texan Pecan Cold Brew is a standout choice, offering a smooth, nutty flavor that’s both refreshing and satisfying. If you’re more into warm concoctions, their specialty drinks, like the Caramel Macchiato and Coconut Mocha, offer a comforting embrace in a cup. I have personally tried their Coconut Mocha, which was a little sweet for my liking but the coconut flavor balances it out, and my personal favorite Chai Latte. It’s milky and creamy, with a perfect temperature to warm me up. Galveston was cold & rainy during Mardi Gras and this was a perfect way to give me a boost & warmth.
Customization is also a breeze here, with options for every preference, from non-dairy milks to extra espresso shots. Their espresso drinks start at $3 while their specialty drinks range from $5.50- $6 depending on your choice & size.
Beyond coffee, their menu boasts a variety of teas, smoothies, and even Blue Bell Ice Cream, providing a treat for every palate. They also have cookies and pastries they serve regularly.. not just on Mardi Gras.
Friendly baristas
What makes Sugar Bean special for me is its vibrant community feel. During Mardi Gras, the cafe buzzed with a friendly, upbeat vibe, making it easy to strike up conversations with locals and tourists alike. The baristas were also friendly and accommodating, even explaining what special pastries they have that I can try. I can be a little picky with my coffee. I don’t like my coffee too black nor too milky and sweet, I don’t like my cup way too hot that you can’t drink it immediately nor too cold that it’s filled with ice, and the baristas were patient in accommodating that.
Is this the coziest cafe in Galveston?
For me, it sure is! So, next time you’re on the island, make sure Sugar Bean is on your itinerary. Dive into their delicious offerings, soak up the festive spirit, and enjoy a slice of local life that’s as sweet as their king cake.
