Blue Sushi Sake Grill Houston Review: Spicy Gringo, Crispy Rice, & Must-Try Rolls
If you’re looking for the best sushi in Houston with creative rolls, modern vibes, and a menu that caters to everyone from traditionalists to adventurous foodies, let me introduce you to Blue Sushi Sake Grill.
They have multiple locations. I went to their Heights branch on a Friday night.
M-K-T in The Heights is booming with new restaurants popping left and right. We discovered this place randomly, because the initial restaurant we wanted to go to was fully booked. This sleek sushi spot blends Japanese flavor with bold, untraditional flavors, and after finally trying it for myself, I totally get the hype.
The Vibe: Upscale Sushi Meets Trendy Heights Hangout
As part of the buzzy M-K-T development in the Heights, Blue Sushi fits right in with its chic aesthetic. There’s outdoor seating, ambient lighting, and gives you both laid-back and lively ambience. We went here during dinner. and it was packed. We were lucky they have a table that’s just been cleared out. People were enjoying the bar food and happy hour. We were seated outside which was less noisy, and it gave us a good view of dogs walking by while we were waiting for our food.
What We Ordered (And Loved)
We came hungry, and left wowed. The menu’s filled with both familiar rolls and unexpected combos.
Mango Crab Rangoon
It’s your usual crab rangoon—crispy, golden wrappers stuffed with crab meat , cream cheese, and a sweet hit of mango that totally works. I love mangoes, and mangoes in my rangoon? I’m sold! It doesn’t overpower the flavor, but it adds this fresh, tropical vibe that cuts through the richness. And the chili-mirin the rangoon is sitting on? Yummy. It’s a little sweet, a little spicy, and I dipped the rangoons back and forth in that sauce LOL. These come out super hot and crispy, so give ’em a minute before diving in. Totally worth the hype.

Tuna Tataki
No sushi visit is complete without having some tuna. This tuna tataki is a no-brainer. The tuna is seared just enough on the edges but still buttery in the middle, and the citrus ponzu dressing adds this bright, zesty punch. It’s clean, delicate, and feels kind of fancy but not in a try-hard way. The portion’s generous too, especially if you’re sharing. Okay, maybe not that generous because this was a banger and I could’ve eaten more. But yes, generously enough if you don’t have an appetite like me.I loved that they added crispy garlic and microgreens on top. It gave it a nice crunch and freshness.

Itchy Salmon Roll
If you love baked salmon or anything spicy-crab, this is a no-brainer appetizer. I’d order it again because there’s only 2 pieces for this food. The name is weird I admit but don’t let the name fool you.
The Itchy Salmon layers baked Atlantic salmon on top of spicy crab, all sitting on a crispy wonton chip. It’s small, but packed with flavor: smoky, creamy, a little spicy, and texturally perfect thanks to that crunchy base. I honestly didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. I wish there’s more pieces for this though. It’s one bite and it’s gone. That can be positive because it’s that good, but hot dang, it left me craving for more.

Spicy Gringo Roll
If you're looking for the best spicy sushi in Houston, this is the one. 5 pieces of spicy goodness that you’ll drool over.
The soy paper, torched finish, and chili aioli made each bite pop. This roll brings the heat in the best way. It’s got salmon, tuna, albacore, and jalapeño, all wrapped in soy paper and torched for that little smoky char. The spicy mayo and chili oil on top hit you with flavor right away. It’s rich, a little fiery, and just melts in your mouth. The only comment I have is that I didn’t like how the wasabi paired with this roll. But overall, it’s delicious. It’s one of those rolls you low-key fight over when sharing. My tip? Just get one for yourself. You’ll want more than a couple bites.

Crispy Rice Cake with Spicy Tuna
I’m Asian, of course I love rice. Rice is a must. But this gave a whole new definition of rice rolls for me. Crispy bottom, creamy spicy tuna on top, and just the right amount of jalapeño heat. I’d order this again (and again). An all-time favorite. You get these little rectangles of crispy rice (like fried sushi rice) topped with spicy tuna and a slice of jalapeño. The outside’s crunchy, the inside’s soft and sticky, and the tuna is creamy with just enough heat. It’s that mix of textures that makes it addicting. I could eat a dozen of these no lie.
