Henderson & Kane Houston Review – Must-Try BBQ Meat Platter
If you're craving real Texas BBQ that’s tasty, HUGE, affordable, and with neighborhood charm, Henderson & Kane in the Old Sixth Ward might just become your new favorite smokehouse.
Our friends & I set up a BBQ date at Henderson & Kane one weekend, and it has quickly become our go-to spot for BBQ. We’ve brought our friends, family, and had some date nights here, with everyone having full bellies.
The General Store
Walking into Henderson & Kane didn’t feel like your typical BBQ joint where the sight of meat and sides welcome you. First impression was like I was in a local bodega with a cafe right to the door, chips and salsas all around, and a fridge filled with all kinds of drinks including Mexican coke. That’s already a win! The building itself is over 100 years old, and they've preserved that sense of history with the interior, shelves of local goods, and of course all the meaty temptation.
This place is half small-town grocer, half serious smokehouse, and the blend totally works.
What We Ordered: The Meat Platter
Our group of 4 went all in with The Platter, which lets you sample multiple smoked meats with sides. Here's what hit our tray:
Brisket (moist + fatty cut): Tender, smoky, and deeply flavorful with a beautiful bark. It practically melts in your mouth.
Jalapeño-Cheddar Sausage: Our favorite! Definitely a standout. Perfect snap, just enough heat, and gooey cheese that made it unforgettable.
Pulled Pork: Juicy and well-seasoned. It tasted better with a splash of their house BBQ sauce.
Ribs: Fall-off-the-bone tender with a sweet glaze and smoky depth.
Chicken: There were some bites that felt like chicken breast (dry, iykyk) but with seasoning and sauce, you can make it taste better. We usually have chicken as our leftover and make it into sandwiches the next day.
Sides: Since we’ve been here multiple times, we’ve basically sampled all their sides, Mac & Cheese can be a hit and miss, but when it hits, it definitely hits the spot. The cream corn is also a favorite staple of ours. It has green chile that gives you that spicy and sweet flavor balancing each other out making it the perfect blend of both worlds. I’m not a fan of coleslaw but our friends love it. Green beans would sometimes be crispy and garlicky, and sometimes soggy. Our go-to choices are Mac & Cheese, and cream corn.
This meat platter is for $46.95. If you order individual plates such as the brisket plate, it’s $19.95 so I recommend to go with the platter. If it’s just the 2 or 3 of us eating, there’s tons of leftover we take home that lasts us for days, and if it’s 4 people, that whole platter is wiped clean.
What Makes It Special
They source locally, smoke everything on-site, and run it all with the vibe of a family-run neighborhood shop. You can grab a latte, local honey, or a pack of farm eggs with your brisket. That kind of place. The staff has always been nice and friendly to us and would tell us the new arrivals be it the drinks selection or dessert.
Don’t Miss:
Daily specials like smoked turkey, pork belly burnt ends, or pastrami
Their housemade sauces and rubs (grab one to take home)
Coffee and pastries in the morning if you’re just stopping in early
Good to Know
Seating is limited but cozy . There some indoor tables and a few outside
Family-friendly and great for takeout
Open Tuesday–Sunday (check Google Maps for hours)
If you’re near Washington Ave or exploring Houston’s historic neighborhoods, make the detour. It’s worth it.
